Fitzroy Gardens campaign

In 2010 the 2011 Residents Association, along with the Save Fitzroy Gardens group and thousands of local residents, strongly opposed the City of Sydney Council’s plans to bulldoze the Fitzroy Gardens located in Kings Cross.

The plans were described in a Sydney Morning Herald article as “Council’s plan to rip out the heart of the Cross”.

The Association argued the that the modernist landscaped gardens, which had been designed by Ilmar Berzins, Australia’s first landscape architect, in 1973 were integral to the heritage and amenity of our neighbourhood and should be retained and just be better maintained.
