PAGE 8 – Just fix it: letter to the Wentworth Courier

The following letter by 2011RA member Peter Young was published in the Wentworth Courier on June 20th 2012:

Just fix it

Mark Murdoch’s words “just fix it” echo the frustration of Kings Cross residents at the actions of Sydney City Council over the past five years.  The council’s actions have shown it is seemingly incapable of doing so. For example, today (Thursday June 14) marks the 14th (at least) continuous day the only public toilets in Kings Cross, situated under the police station, have been inoperable.

Whilst the fundamental things are neglected by council, it wastes resources on unnecessary and unwanted projects. The proposed $20 million makeover of Fitzroy Gardens, unwanted by the vast majority, and the budgeted $1.5 million beautification of Victoria Street.

The proposal to take action, in October (after the September council elections) is typical. Council’s agenda is not primarily concerned about the needs of residents, but massaging the political cycle.
